What is Climate Change?
The earth's atmosphere is made up of gases, called the ozone layer. These gases are important in deflecting harmful radiation from the sun as well as containing heat within the atmosphere to sustain life and therefore, the world today. However, with today's constantly developing, technology-based society, the burning of fossil fuels for energy is common. This increasing amout of greenhouse gasses gathering in the atmosphere, making the gases thicker, and harder for heat to escape.
A commonly misconceived idea is that Global Warming is the same as Climate Change. Although similiar, they are actually different concepts. The most common gas present in the greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2). In the last 200 years, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has increased by 30%. Originally, scientists thought this increase was making the earth's atmosphere heat up but now it is understood that it is actually creating more extreme temperatures; ie. warmer summers and colder winters. This is what scientists called the Greenhouse Effect.
